Cx-5’s interior indulges both heart and soul

What does it mean to craft something, rather than simply assembling it? The difference is attention to detail. When Mazda designed the all-new 2017 CX-5 crossover SUV, the goal was to create a crafted interior with a sharp focus on how the driver and passengers perceive comforts and create a unique connection with the vehicle. To achieve “oneness” between a vehicle and its driver, Mazda engineers were inspired by the Japanese concept of “Jinba Ittai,” or “horse and rider as one.” When a vehicle becomes an extension of the driver, only then is harmony achieved. Providing better control and confidence means every drive is an elevated experience. That’s why every Mazda, from the throttle response and driver-centered cockpits to their agile steering delivers this feeling of Jinba Ittai. more Connecting man to machine is the spirit built into every Mazda. A belief that a car should respect and adapt to its driver’s sensibilities. That’s why every Mazda interior is designed with a driver-centric approach that’s both welcoming and intuitive, with controls and gauges laid out with precision and purpose. And through ceaseless exploration of unconventional ideas, Mazda designers have discovered more ways to make a difference in everyday driving. “We try to reflect the customer’s taste and hone in on what they’re really needing and wanting, and listen to their voice,” said Mazda designer Teresa Spafford. “You have to start with quality materials. From the metal finishes, to the wood trim, to the suede or leather that people touch, it all has to be high quality.” A traditional design approach has been to use metal or wood trimmings, but Mazda likes to defy convention. Mazda designers created a combination finished called “Metal Wood,” which expresses a rich, elegant look with a simpler Japanese design aesthetic. It was no easy task — development took over a year and more than 20 prototypes before “Metal Wood” was perfected. At Mazda, designers and engineers bring this level of meticulous obsession to all their work, relentlessly seeking artistry at every step of the design process. So while refined materials are the foundation of a pleasing interior design, they’re not the final product. The next stage of crafting a sophisticated interior is the aesthetic. “You have to look at the shape that you’re putting that material into,” Spafford explained. “You have to make sure that there’s harmony between the material and the shape. I think what we’ve done as a team is to pull together how our materials harmonize and complement our forms.” The result is an interior that exceeds expectations. “It’s definitely a feeling of getting more than you wanted, so that you really get a feeling for everything as being more refined and a much more sophisticated taste,” she stated. In the fiercely competitive crossover SUV marketplace, it’s common for automakers to cut corners to save money. It’s understandable, but it’s not how Mazda does business. Crafting with a human touch, this physical connection to the product, is critical. Mazda believes this imparts the spirit of each crafstman into every vehicle it makes. You’ll see this expressed in every aspect of Mazda designs. But more importantly, you will feel it.

Mazda And Mazda Foundation Contribute Additional Funds For Hurricane Disaster Support

In the wake of the continued impact of Hurricane Harvey on the greater Houston area, and the recent destruction caused by Hurricane Irma across Florida, Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) and the Mazda Foundation (USA), Inc., today announced an additional immediate $100,000 donation to the American Red Cross. This donation comes after an announcement last week whereby Mazda donated $100,000 to the American Red Cross for Hurricane Harvey relief efforts. The Mazda Foundation and MNAO have been long-standing partners with the American Red Cross. Through the partnership, MNAO is a $1-million member of the Red Cross Annual Disaster Giving Program (ADGP). As an ADGP member, Mazda’s donation helps ensure that the Red Cross has the necessary resources to respond to disasters large and small, helping people whenever and wherever it is needed. 2017 Mazda CX-9 Earns Strategic Vision’s ‘Total Qualty Impact’ Award

Much like Mazda’s entire lineup, CX-9 continues to garner praise from media and consumers alike. The 2017 Mazda CX-9 three-row crossover SUV further adds to the list of recognitions, earning Strategic Vision’s Total Quality Award as the top midsize crossover SUV in its segment. Mazda’s standout crossover SUV remains the flagship of Mazda’s lineup, positioned to push the brand to new, aspirational heights. Strategic Vision clearly agreed with its Total Quality Impact report, which is a complete, holistic measure of the total quality of vehicle ownership experience, encompassing the positive and negative product experience, including reliability, driving excitement and other aspects of dealership experiences—all energized by the emotional response associated with the experiences. Strategic Vision surveyed customers about even the smallest details, including sound of the engine, quality of the interior seat material and the overall performance. more A major reason Strategic Vision bestowed the CX-9 with its Total Quality Impact Award is because it meets and exceeds owner expectations by providing a premium driving and passenger experience, courtesy of an award-winning, turbocharged SKYACTIV-G 2.5T engine, which delivers excellent performance in everyday driving scenarios, and an interior that is pleasing to the sight and touch with available Nappa leather, real aluminum trim and rosewood supplied by premium Japanese guitar-maker Fujigen. It is with these qualities that Mazda is seeing CX-9 conquest sales from premium and luxury brands. Additionally, complementing what customers see and feel when they drive CX-9 is the peace of mind they get with its safety credentials. The 2017 Mazda CX-9 was recently named as an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick+, the highest designation the nonprofit organization awards. Mazda is the only automaker in North America to have a full line of vehicles rated as Top Safety Pick+ when equipped with available headlights and safety systems. With a starting MSRP of $31,520, Mazda CX-9 provides a remarkable value, from its crafted details to its sleek KODO—Soul of Motion design. MSRP does not include $940 destination charge ($985 in Alaska) or taxes, fees or additional charges.

2018 Mazda CX-9 Flagship Three-Row Crossover SUV Receives Long List of Upgrades

From its bold looks to the class-above experience it offers the driver and passengers, Mazda’s CX-9 has earned a reputation for excellence, being named a finalist for both North American Utility Vehicle of the Year and World Car of the Year. Mazda engineers haven’t rested on their laurels, however, adding numerous upgrades to the 2018 CX-9 flagship crossover SUV, further strengthening the “Mazda Premium” indulgences it provides. Among the highlights are more features at every price point such as an improved second row for both greater comfort and easier third-row access and greater sound insulation in what is already one of the quietest vehicles in its class. more All 2018 CX-9 models receive Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) for the first time, a technology that can automatically apply the brakes in emergency situations below 19 mph. CX-9 joins the 2018 Mazda3 compact sedan and 5-door, 2018 CX-3 subcompact crossover SUV and 2017 CX-5 compact crossover SUV in having SCBS as standard. SCBS is a technology that comes as part of Mazda’s i-ACTIVSENSE suite of safety systems. Additionally, Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert are now standard. CX-9 is one of a handful of three-row crossover SUVs to earn a 2017 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety “Top Safety Pick+” recommendation, joining all Mazda models tested to earn the nonprofit’s highest award when equipped with proper headlights and specific technologies. “Mazda CX-9 is designed to provide peace of mind through its i-ACTIVSENSE safety technology suite and its passive features like a strong, lightweight SKYACTIV-BODY. The secondary benefit to its structure is that also helps it deliver uncommonly good, surefooted driving dynamics,” said Tetsu Nakazawa, CX-9 vehicle line manager, Mazda North American Operations (MNAO). “Families trust us to build vehicles that not only surprise and delight with how they drive but also with the engineering excellence that goes into making them, showing that there’s no need to compromise between needs and wants in a seven-passenger people-hauler.” CX-9’s engaging driving dynamics are a further hallmark of the Mazda brand, complemented by its industry-exclusive G-Vectoring Control (GVC), which is new to CX-9 models for 2018. GVC uses the engine in conjunction with steering and throttle inputs to minutely reduce engine torque, putting more weight on the front wheels and making the steering feel more linear and direct. As a result, the driver is able to gain more confidence and control behind the wheel. For 2018, Mazda’s midsize family crossover SUV returns with Sport, Touring, Grand Touring and Signature trim levels, but it includes more equipment at each price point. Besides the newly standard safety technology and refinements, CX-9 Sport features cloth upholstery, standard LED headlights and tail lights, 18-inch alloy wheels, an electronic parking brake, MAZDA CONNECTTM infotainment with a 7-inch screen and Bluetooth audio streaming and phone pairing as standard. In its newly available Sport Package, the standard CX-9 adds auto on/off headlights, High Beam Control, Lane Departure Warning, Lane-Keep Assist, Smart Brake Support, rain-sensing wipers, heated front seats and a power driver’s seat. Additionally, the Sport Package includes full-speed Mazda Radar Cruise Control. The mid-level CX-9 Touring adds leather seating surfaces, an auto-dimming rearview mirror with built-in Homelink garage door opener, power liftgate, Advanced Keyless Entry and an 8-inch MAZDA CONNECTTM screen. New Mazda CX-9 Touring features include the addition of a tilt function on the driver’s seat and power passenger seat with lift and lumbar support. CX-9 Touring’s Premium Package includes LED fog lights, navigation, a lauded BOSE® 12-speaker Premium audio system, SiriusXM satellite radio with a 4-month subscription, rear parking sensors, new front parking sensors, sunroof, retractable sunshades in the second-row doors and a moonroof. The high-trim CX-9 Grand Touring includes 20-inch wheels, Adaptive Front-lighting System, aluminum interior trim, Active Driving Display head-up unit with new Traffic Sign Recognition, roof rails and a memory driver’s seat. CX-9 Grand Touring’s all-new features include heated second-row seats, a heated steering wheel and windshield wiper de-icer. Finally, the top-of-the-line CX-9 Signature adorns the interior with Auburn-colored Nappa leather, rosewood trim supplied by premium Japanese guitar-maker Fujigen and LED signature grille and LED interior lighting. It is with its upmarket KODO design, refinement, driving dynamics and technology that CX-9 has found a home with premium crossover SUV intenders, with more than 55 percent of those purchasing a CX-9 this year opting for a CX-9 Grand Touring or Signature model. Yet, all CX-9s come standard with Mazda’s torque-rich, turbocharged and efficient SKYACTIV-G 2.5T engine, paired to a 6-speed SKYACTIV-DRIVE automatic transmission. Front-wheel is standard for CX-9 Sport, Touring and Grand Touring models. Mazda’s predictive i-ACTIV all-wheel drive is available on all three trim levels and standard for CX-9 Signature. The 2018 Mazda CX-9 will arrive at dealerships nationwide this month. MSRP does not include $940 for destination and handling ($985 in Alaska), taxes, title or additional fees. Dealers set actual sale prices. 2017 CX-9 versus 2017/2018 three-row, midsize crossover SUVs. Mazda’s Entry-Level Crossover SUV Gains New Safety, Luxury and Technology Features

Already a standout for its impressive fuel-efficiency, award-winning design, top safety scores, spirited driving dynamics and upscale amenities, the Mazda CX-3 subcompact crossover SUV has undergone its first round of thoughtful improvements, treating drivers to an impressive value with available features they might not find in vehicles costing twice as much. Newly standard for every trim level is Smart City Brake Support, which can automatically apply the brakes in emergency situations below 19 mph. CX-3 joins several other vehicles in Mazda’s lineup as carrying this critical piece of safety equipment as standard, including the 2018 Mazda3 compact sedan and 5-door and CX-5 compact crossover SUV. more CX-3’s driving experience is complemented by Mazda’s exclusive G-Vectoring Control, which uses the engine in conjunction with steering and throttle inputs to minutely reduce engine torque, putting more weight on the front wheels and making the steering feel more linear and direct. As a result, the driver is able to gain more confidence and control behind the wheel. The entry-level CX-3 Sport trim comes with standard cloth seats, power windows, power remote door locks, power mirrors, two USB ports, backup camera, Bluetooth hands-free calling and audio pairing and MAZDA CONNECTTM, among a long list of other features. MAZDA CONNECTTM features a standard 7-inch, full-color display that combines infotainment and diagnostic functions in one place, controlled through voice commands, a touchscreen while at standstill or the Commander control knob when the vehicle is in motion. The mid-level CX-3 Touring replaces CX-3 Sport’s standard 16-inch alloy wheels with 18-inch wheels and replaces cloth seats with leatherette and Lux Suede upholstery. CX-3 Touring also comes with Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Mazda Advanced Keyless Entry, heated front seats and heated side mirrors with integrated turn signals. Newly standard features for CX-3 Touring include auto on/off headlights, rain-sensing windshield wipers and automatic climate control. The Touring Preferred Equipment Package escalates Mazda’s mid-trim model with a BOSE® Premium audio system with seven speakers, power glass moonroof, SiriusXM satellite radio with a 4-month subscription, HD Radio and a cargo cover. Finally, CX-3 Grand Touring builds upon the Preferred Equipment Package and includes Parchment or black leather with red accents and Lux Suede upholstery, adaptive LED headlights, LED fog lights, LED daytime running lights, Mazda Navigation, a full-color Active Driving Display head-up unit and paddle shifters. The GT Premium Package tops off CX-3 with Mazda Radar Cruise Control, Smart Brake Support for highway speeds, Lane-Departure Warning, High Beam Control and all-new features that include a 6-way power driver’s seat, power driver’s lumbar support, 2-position driver memory seat, heated steering wheel and Traffic Sign Recognition. While many improvements can be seen in the cabin, some of CX-3’s greatest changes can only be felt from behind the wheel such as revised suspension bushings, new front lower control arms, recalibrated dampers and new engine mounts, all designed to benefit CX-3’s already class-leading chassis dynamics. Further, the 2018 CX-3 comes with improved door seals, thicker rear glass and sound suppression mats added underneath the floor and dashboard for a more refined, “Mazda Premium” experience. And, because Mazda’s engineering team doesn’t believe in waiting for major redesigns to implement changes that benefit consumers, throttle and transmission responsiveness have also been improved, complementing Mazda’s “Jinba Ittai”—horse and rider as one—driving philosophy. All CX-3 models sold in the U.S. come with a standard SKYACTIV-G 2.0-liter engine that delivers a 146 horsepower and 146 lb-ft of torque, paired with an efficient SKYACTIV-DRIVE 6-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard; Mazda’s predictive i-ACTIV all-wheel drive is available on every trim level, feeding information from 27 sensors found in CX-3 to predict road conditions and send power wherever it’s needed without the unnerving drivetrain reactions or slipping that can be felt in some competitors during inclement conditions. The 2018 Mazda CX-3 is on sale in select regions now and will be on sale nationwide in September.

Redefining a Legend: How Mazda Designed the Fourth-Generation MX-5 Miata

Part I: Teamwork Makes the Dream Work Commonly, we think the lead singer is the band. He or she is the only reason the band ever became famous—or so we’re led to believe. Remember, though, there’s  the drummer keeping beat, a bassist supporting the timing of the rhythm guitarist and perhaps a few uncredited backup singers making the singer’s voice sound extra powerful. more The same applies when designing a car. While oftentimes one person receives credit as the design chief, it takes a long cast of characters to not only design a car but also drive its inspiration. Take, for example, the fourth-generation MX-5 Miata that went on sale in 2015. Back in 2011, designers from Japan, the U.S. and Europe, led by MX-5 Chief Designer Masashi Nakayama (MX-5 program manager since July 2016) and under the direction of Ikuo Maeda, Mazda’s global head of design, were tasked with redefining Mazda’s legendary roadster. Program Manager Nobuhiro Yamamoto kicked off their efforts by setting targets for what would define the next-generation MX-5—a vehicle whose size and weight they knew would be more comparable to the first-generation’s than any that had come since, with the objective to “innovate in order to preserve.” Their work—and the work of teams from Mazda Corporation in Hiroshima and Tokyo, Japan; Irvine, California-based Mazda Design Americas; and the Frankfurt, German-based Mazda Design Europe shaped Mazda’s smallest but perhaps most vital car. All of the design departments had to work under a very difficult fact: the MX-5 is timeless, somehow being both classic and thoroughly modern at the same time. They had to figure out how to make the car appeal to a new set of buyers without alienating those who made it the best-selling roadster of all time. Upon setting targets, the program team set proportions of the MX-5. Rather than retaining the familiar, somewhat symmetrical shape, with the cabin in the middle of the car, the lines of KODO—Soul of Motion design called for a cab-rearward look, evolving the car’s proportions with some of the same appeal of exotic, European roadsters of yore. Designers and engineers moved the windshield back 70mm from where it had always been. With the MX-5’s “hard points”—where the structural elements of the car like the windshield would be—set, the teams were provided three objectives for Mazda’s next-gen sports car: Beautiful proportions, a roof opens and closes beautifully and details that tickle minds of enthusiasts. The teams had to create a car that complemented the KODO design language but also expanded upon it in a way that was unique to the MX-5. “Our goal was to find a solution to reach that goal. Therefore we defined a task to ourselves, which was to satisfy seemingly conflicting elements of ‘simple and distinct image’ and ‘emotional and expressive image’ at the same time,” said Nakayama. “We made a commitment to never freeze the design until we get there. Upholding this high goal, the journey of developing this car’s design had begun.” In June 2011, all of the studios submitted 1/4-scale clay models showcasing what they felt the next generation MX-5 should look like for evaluation. Each brought unique details that deserved consideration.

Mazda to further reduce CO2 emissions by making fundamental improvements to core technologies

Environmental Technology Philosophy In March 2007, Mazda announced the “Sustainable Zoom-Zoom” plan, detailing the company's long-term vision for technology development. This vision commits us to make “cars that always excite, look inviting to drive, are fun to drive, and make you want to drive them again,” and to help achieve “an exciting, sustainable future for cars, people and the Earth”. Based on this plan, in June 2008, we announced that by 2015 we intend to make a 30 percent improvement on the 2008 average fuel economy of Mazda vehicles sold worldwide. more Building Block Strategy - Contributing as it expands In recent years, new electric devices have been introduced that have led to the development of automobiles such as hybrids and electric vehicles. We have entered an era in which performance delivered by the traditional technologies such as engine, transmission, body, chassis and other vehicle parts is being augmented through their combination with electrical components. Nevertheless, it is forecast that internal combustion engines will still account for a high percentage of automobile powertrains even as far ahead as 2020. Anticipated expansion in adoption of environmental technologies (up to 2020) Consequently, Mazda is prioritizing improvements of the base technologies such as improvement in thermal efficiency of an engine and weight reduction for the vehicle body while adopting a Building Block Strategy of gradually introducing electric devices such as brake energy regeneration system, hybrid and other systems. This approach aims to effectively reduce total CO2 emissions with cars that offer a winning combination of driving pleasure and excellent environmental and safety performance to all our customers, without relying heavily on vehicles that are strictly dedicated to meeting environmental needs. Mazda Announces long-term vision for technology development, ‘Sustainable zoom-zoom 2030

Mazda Motor Corporation today announced “Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030,” a new long-term vision for technology development that looks ahead to the year 2030. As part of the new technology to achieve this vision, the company disclosed plans to introduce a next-generation engine called SKYACTIV-X in 2019. SKYACTIV-X will be the world’s first commercial gasoline engine to use compression ignition.1 Under the original “Sustainable Zoom-Zoom” vision announced in 2007, the company has striven to offer both driving pleasure and outstanding environmental and safety performance. In light of the rapid changes taking place in the automotive industry, the new vision takes a longer-term perspective and sets out how Mazda will use driving pleasure, the fundamental appeal of the automobile, to help solve issues facing people, the earth and society. more The following is an overview of “Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030” and the next-generation SKYACTIV-X engine. 1. SUSTAINABLE ZOOM-ZOOM 2030 Mazda believes its mission is to bring about a beautiful earth and to enrich people’s lives as well as society. The company will continue to seek ways to inspire people through the value found in cars. Earth Through conservation initiatives, create a sustainable future in which people and cars coexist with a bountiful, beautiful earth Mazda’s approach • Expand measures for carbon dioxide reduction from a “well-to-wheel” perspective, considering emissions over the vehicle’s entire life cycle • Aim to reduce corporate average “well-to-wheel” carbon dioxide emissions to 50 percent of 2010 levels by 2030, and achieve a 90-percent reduction by 2050 • Achieve this with a policy prioritizing efficiency improvements and measures for cleaner emissions that apply in the real world • In line with this policy, continue efforts to perfect the internal combustion engine, which will help power the majority of cars worldwide for many years to come and can therefore make the greatest contribution to reducing carbon dioxide emissions, and combine the results with effective electrification technologies • From 2019, start introducing electric vehicles and other electric drive technologies in regions that use a high ratio of clean energy for power generation or restrict certain vehicles to reduce air pollution Society Through cars and a society that provide safety and peace of mind, create a system that enriches people’s lives by offering unrestricted mobility to people everywhere Mazda’s approach • Develop more advanced safety technologies under the Mazda Proactive Safety philosophy, working toward the goal of eliminating traffic accidents • Further enhance safety fundamentals, such as correct driving position, pedal layout and good visibility, and standardize them across all models • Promote further standardization of i-ACTIVSENSE advanced safety features, which help drivers recognize and assess potential hazards; in addition to Japan, where they are already becoming standard, gradually make these technologies standard in other markets starting in 2018 • Begin testing of autonomous driving technologies currently being developed in line with Mazda’s human-centered Mazda Co-Pilot Concept2 in 2020, aiming to make the system standard on all models by 2025 • Using connectivity technologies, create a new business model that enables car owners to support the needs of people in depopulated areas and those who have difficulty getting around People Enhance customers’ mental well-being with the satisfaction that comes from protecting the earth and contributing to society with a car that offers true driving pleasure Mazda’s approach • Pursue an enhanced Jinba-ittai driving feel that will unlock people’s potential and revitalize them mentally and physically • Based on the philosophy of “breathing life into the car,” further develop KODO design to raise vehicle design to the level of art that enriches the emotional lives of all who see it 2. SKYACTIV-X NEXT-GENERATION ENGINE Technological innovations • SKYACTIV-X is the world’s first commercial gasoline engine to use compression ignition, in which the fuel-air mixture ignites spontaneously when compressed by the piston • A proprietary combustion method called Spark Controlled Compression Ignition overcomes two issues that had impeded commercialization of compression ignition gasoline engines: maximizing the zone in which compression ignition is possible and achieving a seamless transition between compression ignition and spark ignition. Features • This new proprietary combustion engine combines the advantages of gasoline and diesel engines to achieve outstanding environmental performance, power and acceleration performance. • Compression ignition and a supercharger fitted to improve fuel economy together deliver unprecedented engine response and increase torque 10–30 percent over the current SKYACTIV-G gasoline engine.3 • Compression ignition makes possible a super lean burn4 that improves engine efficiency up to 20–30 percent over the current SKYACTIV-G, and from 35–45 percent over Mazda’s 2008 gasoline engine of the same displacement. SKYACTIV-X even equals or exceeds the latest SKYACTIV-D diesel engine in fuel efficiency. • With high efficiency across a wide range of rpms and engine loads, the engine allows much more latitude in the selection of gear ratios, providing both superior fuel economy and driving performance. • Moving forward Mazda hopes to help create a future in which people, the earth and society can coexist with cars, to enrich people’s lives through a car ownership experience that celebrates driving, and to become a brand with which customers feel a strong emotional connection.
