In this busy world, consumers of all generations are engaged in a silent battle to disconnect from work and social media — and the devices that keep them tethered to both. Millennials are no different. A recent survey of 1,004 Millennials (aged 23-38) living in the U.S., conducted by Kelton Global on behalf of Mazda, revealed that if given free time, they would most like to hit the road for a trip, with 39 percent of respondents saying they would head out for a driving adventure. That is 50 percent more Millennials than those who would choose to be a homebody for the weekend to binge content — only 26 percent. Driving not only allows Millennials to disconnect, but also provides an opportunity to reconnect with their travel companions. Almost two-thirds, or 64 percent, of Millennials agree road trips create quality time with their passengers. In fact, their choice of travel companions reiterates their yearning for a connection. Almost all Millennials, at 92 percent, agreed that if they had to pick, they would rather go on a road trip with a loved one than a celebrity musician, athlete, actor or social media star. more However, the Mazda Millennial Drivers Survey also uncovered that 22 percent of Millennial drivers would give their car an “A” rating as a getaway companion. Limited storage, uncomfortable seating, hard-to-reach settings, among other issues mean Millennials often think twice before going on a road trip. Key findings include: • Lack of Confidence. Many Millennials are hesitant to make the drive, as 72 percent say there isat least one reason that has held them back from taking a road trip. Frequently cited reasons were lack of confidence in their own driving abilities (28 percent are not comfortable driving in inclement weather and 19 percent don’t trust their skills at the wheel on unfamiliar terrains), while another 15 percent feel their vehicle is not high-performance enough to handle the adventure. • Storage Issues. More than three-quarters (76 percent) of Millennial drivers have experienced difficulties trying to fit what they want to bring along into their car. Among those who’ve had issues with cargo space, the top items they wish they had enough room for include camping or sporting equipment (63 percent), luggage (46 percent), and even space to take their pets on road trips (29 percent). In fact, 1 in 10 Millennials admit they have missed out on a road trip because they didn’t have enough space for all their gear. • Physical and Mental Side Effects. Eighty-three percent of Millennials have experienced a physical or mental side effect from driving for long periods of time. Close to half of Millennials (43 percent) put more comfortable interior on their wish-list of features that would make driving more enjoyable. “The results of this study show that Millennials want to reclaim the roads and bring back the road trip — but it also highlights how many are not taking a trip of their dreams because of an inadequate vehicle,” said Dino Bernacchi, chief marketing officer for Mazda North American Operations. “Mazda has been focused on how driving makes you feel for more than 50 years and as a brand rooted in essentialism and ingenuity, we are discovering new ways to heighten driving experiences. A Spacious Cabin The cabin of CX-30 was meticulously crafted to offer an interior space that seats four adults comfortably on even the longest drives. Both the front and rear seats in CX-30 are designed to create a comfortable distance between its occupants. Despite the size difference of the vehicles, CX-30 has the same distance between passengers as the larger-profile Mazda CX-5. Increased space between the seats also allows the driver and front-row passenger to easily converse with second-row passengers or check on a child in a car seat. To further define the space, CX-30 also includes wide center consoles with armrests in both the front and second rows, creating literal ‘elbow room’ for every passenger. A Graceful Entry CX-30 makes it easy to access both the front and rear seats. Even though it has a high ground clearance, its lower hip point on the seats and taller door openings were designed to allow for natural entry and exit. Engineers also added a new shape to the door sills to help prevent accumulations of mud or dust, so that passengers will not get dirt on their clothing when exiting the vehicle. “We carry out a lot of research into the way customers use our vehicles,” said Masanori Mochidzuki of the Architecture Design Department at Mazda. “We want customers to sense the spaciousness of the rear seats as soon as they open the car door and to ensure leg movement will be smooth when they actually board the vehicle. Passengers can get in and out of CX-30 smoothly with minimal neck and lower back strain.” A Quiet Cabin To further enhance the premium experience of CX-30’s interior, one of the most important tasks for Mazda’s designers was to create a quiet, peaceful space; an environment in which the driver can naturally focus on the road and the passengers can relax and have clear conversation. It’s not enough to just make the cabin quiet, though: Mazda’s designers studied human perception of sound to eliminate sounds that are perceived as unpleasant, while transmitting pleasant sounds from the engine and audio system. To achieve a cabin where occupants feel at ease, Mazda engineers rethought nearly every assumption. For example, the audio engineering team at Mazda moved the side speakers in CX-30 from their traditional location in the doors forward to the footwells, eliminating a major source of road noise and vibration. The entire cabin is constructed with a two-layer wall structure, incorporating an insulating layer to further dampen unwanted sound. Holes were eliminated throughout the cabin where possible to enhance the effects of the sound insulation. Even the floor mats and tires were carefully selected for their ability to reduce spikes in road noise caused when traveling across different pavement types. A Refined Audio System While CX-30’s quiet cabin makes conversation a joy, the sound quality in the vehicle is also greatly enhanced by the new Mazda Harmonic Acoustics sound system. By studying human physiology and psychology, Mazda’s engineers were able to position the speakers in a layout for optimal sound playback and transmission to the human ear. This has the effect of balancing out the audio while increasing the dynamic bass range and enhancing mid-range sound clarity to create an immersive quality and clarity of sound reminiscent of a sound studio. Many people who bring their vehicles in when they need to change their oil do not think about bringing it to a dealership because they think we charge more than other places. You may be under the impression that every car needs an oil change at exactly three months or 3,000 miles. Or maybe you're on the other end of the spectrum and you won't bother until your engine actually stops running. (Spoiler alert: if that has happened, it's too late.) The first example is just a little off. The second is scary! MY, HOW TIMES HAVE CHANGED. The standard 3,000 mile rule comes from an earlier age of vehicle production. With advances in both engine and oil technology, you don't need to stick to such a frequent schedule. Some classic and specialty cars will still want to be on this tighter timetable, but if you're driving a Mazda built in the last decade or so, it probably isn't necessary. It won't hurt the car, but you might just be wasting some good oil if you change it too often. BUT WHY SHOULD I BOTHER TO CHANGE THE OIL IN MY CAR? Oil lubricates your engine and all of its little components. When the oil breaks down, it can't do its job effectively anymore. With all that friction, your engine will overheat, which can cause parts to quickly wear down and warp. If you just never change your oil, your engine is likely to eventually seize up and turn into a big useless pile of scrap metal. SO WHAT SHOULD I DO? Unfortunately, there isn't really an easy rule to remember across the board. Each car is different, and each driver is different. The first thing to do is check your owner's manual.
