2017.5 Mazda6 Sedan Adds Available Leather To The Core Of Mazda’s Midsize Mix

The Mazda6 midsize sedan returns repackaged for the 2017.5 model year, with the Mazda6 Touring gaining leather seating surfaces, among other trim changes in both entry Mazda6 Sport and mid-trim Mazda6 Touring models, further bolstering Mazda’s award-winning midsize family sedan. The 2017.5 Mazda6 Sport adds standard Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, furthering Mazda’s continued commitment toward making ever-safer cars and crossover SUVs. In fact, Mazda6 was named a 2017 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety “Top Safety Pick+” recipient—the highest recommendation the non-profit safety agency awards. Mazda6 joins the entire Mazda family of cars and crossover SUVs tested by the IIHS to earn its highest distinction when equipped with optional headlights and equipment and is the only automaker able to make this claim in 2017. more Mazda6 Sport comes standard with 17-inch alloy wheels, cloth seating surfaces, power windows and keyless entry, electronic parking brake and backup camera, among a much longer list of features. The mid-trim Mazda6 Touring’s upgrades to 19-inch wheels and leatherette-upholstered seats. Mazda6 Touring models also add Advanced Keyless Entry, dual-zone automatic climate control, rear HVAC vents, a 6-way power driver’s seat, Smart City Brake Support low-speed automatic braking, automatic headlights and rain-sensing wipers. In addition to the biggest update for 2017.5—the newly available leather seating surfaces—navigation and heated front seats are now standard for the 2017.5 model year. Available Mazda6 Touring packages include the BOSE®/Moonroof/Satellite Radio Package and the Touring Premium Package, which comes in addition to the aforementioned package. The Touring Premium Package includes LED daytime running lights, self-leveling LED headlights, Adaptive Front-lighting system, an auto-dimming interior rearview mirror, Homelink garage door opener, heated side mirrors and an auto-dimming driver’s side mirror. It also includes black or Parchment-colored leather seating surfaces and an 8-way power driver’s seat with adjustable lumbar support, replacing the black leatherette and 6-way power driver’s seat found in other Touring models. On the top end of the spectrum, Mazda6 Grand Touring builds on the features in Mazda6 Touring and further includes a full-color Active Driving Display head-up unit, LED interior lamps, LED fog lights, an LED signature grille surround, driver’s memory seat, 6-way power passenger seat, alarm, steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters, dark-painted alloy wheels, rear lip spoiler, Mazda Radar Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist, High Beam Control and Smart Brake Support. The GT Premium Package adds Mazda’s i-ELOOP regenerative braking technology, rear outboard heated seats, heated steering wheel, Nappa leather seating surfaces with contrast piping, bright-finish metallic switches and handles and a hand-stitched “chidori” steering wheel. All 2017.5 Mazda6 models come equipped with a SKYACTIV-G 2.5-liter engine, paired to a 6-speed manual transmission or 6-speed automatic transmission in Sport and Touring models. The 6-speed automatic transmission is standard in top-trim Mazda6 Grand Touring models. A 7-inch MAZDA CONNECTTM infotainment interface that pairs Bluetooth phone and audio streaming, USB inputs, radio and diagnostic information into a single interface comes standard. All of Mazda6’s features are complemented by a host of improvements introduced for 2017, including improved sound insulation, available Nappa leather seating surfaces, standard G-Vectoring Control vehicle dynamics enhancement technology and available Machine Gray Metallic paint. These highlight the Mazda’s designers and engineers efforts to provide the latest improvements and updates as soon as they become available, foregoing the traditional route of simply adding midcycle updates every few model years.

THROWBACK- 1965 Mazda 1000 Coupe

While the second-generation Mazda Familia (also known as the Mazda 1200 and 1300) was a common sight on the roads in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the 1965 Mazda 1000 Coupe, from the first-generation of the Familia series, remains relatively unknown to all but the most devoted of Mazda enthusiasts. Powered by a newly designed longitudinally mounted overhead camshaft 1,000 cc four-cylinder engine, the compact 1000 Coupe weighed just 1,742 lbs and put out 68 hp at 6,500 rpm and had a top speed of 90 mph. And the sporting theme didn’t stop there. Available in either Tropical Red or Pyrenean White, this sleek coupe boasted a four-speed gearbox, rear-wheel drive, wishbone ball joint suspension, and front disc brakes. The sporty theme continued with the exterior design—note the chrome trim, the exposed trunk-lid hinges, and the gas cap—and into the cabin, which featured a wood-rimmed three-spoke steering wheel, and beautifully styled instrument binnacle with central tachometer. One of the world’s rarest Mazdas—just 8,931 were built from 1965 to 1968—it nevertheless paved the way for a series of high-performance models, including the Luce and Luce SS, from 1966 and 1967 respectively, and the era-defining 1967 Cosmo Sport.

Mazda, Denso, And Toyota Sign Joint Technology Development Contract For Electric Vehicles

Mazda Motor Corporation (Mazda), Denso Corporation (Denso), and Toyota Motor Corporation (Toyota) signed a contract today to jointly develop basic structural technologies for electric vehicles. Furthermore, the three companies have also decided to establish a new company consisting of selected engineers from the three companies to ensure the efficient implementation of the joint technological development projects. As countries and regions around the world adopt increasingly stringent policies to help reduce greenhouse gases, new regulations that mandate a certain proportion of electric vehicle sales are beginning to emerge. Complying with these environmental regulations, while ensuring the sustainable growth of our companies, requires the development of a wide range of powertrains and technologies. We regard electric vehicles (EVs) as a key technological field in this process alongside fuel cell vehicles. more With EVs yet to find widespread market acceptance, the huge investments and time required to cover all markets and vehicle segments is a pressing issue for individual automakers when responding to the widely varying demand for vehicles around the world. Mazda, Denso, and Toyota have decided to jointly develop basic structural technologies for EVs capable of covering a wide variety of vehicle segments and types to ensure flexible and rapid response to market trends. This agreement covers a diverse range of models, from minivehicles to passenger vehicles, SUVs, and light trucks, and aims to innovate the development process by combining the strengths of each company, including Mazda’s bundled product planning and prowess in computer modeling-based development, Denso’s electronics technologies, and the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform. The new company will engage in the following: • Research into the characteristics (common architecture*) that define optimum performance and functions of EVs from the standpoint of both individual components and the whole vehicle • Verification of component installation and vehicle performance realized by the characteristics achieved in item 1) • Examination of the optimum concept for each car classification with regard to each component and each type of vehicle realized by achieving items 1) and 2) • Through this joint technological development project, by dedicating an equal amount of development resources, ensuring efficient development processes, and taking advantage of existing production facilities, Mazda and Toyota intend to focus their resources on fundamental vehicle values to enable the creation of appealing EVs that embody the unique identities of each brand and avoid the commoditization of EVs. The companies also aim to create a business structure that is open to participation by other automakers and suppliers. *Common architecture is the basic product design concept for realizing required product performance bydistributing those requirements among structural components. Under the concept of a common architecture, the basic structure of each component can be commonized, thereby transcending differences in vehicle class and power. By organizing component characteristics, various products can be developed and produced through the same process.

How Mazda Designed The Fourth-generation Mx-5 Miata

Every car comes from somewhere. This is the third part of four covering how the design of the fourth-generation Mazda MX-5 Miata came to be. HEADLIGHTS FRONT AND CENTER So, the body of the all-new MX-5 had been chosen, but there was still some room to make the front of it stand on its own. Going back to the earliest MX-5s, designers looked at why there were pop-up headlights: To keep the front end low, which made it look especially sleek in its diminutive stature. After time, as exposed headlights replaced the 1990-1997 pop-up units and evolved to meet safety and lighting legislation around the world, the MX-5’s front end became bulky. Again, it was time to go back to the beginning. Of course, pop-up headlights were no longer en vogue, and there was no chance they’d be coming back. But there needed to be some sort of tie to the rest of the Mazda family—simple and clean like the first-gen’s running lamps or almond-shaped like those of the rest of the Mazda family. more In the end, the team used cues adapted from the European proposals, giving the MX-5 an expressive face that complemented both objectives. As the design and engineering teams worked with one another, they became aware of new technologies that allowed them to do more with less. In the early 1990s, three professors—two Japanese and the other a Japanese-born U.S. citizen—Isamu Akasaki, Hiroshi Amano and Shuji Nakamura—invented the blue LED bulb, which was far larger than existing LED lights and could be used for commercial lighting. Their invention would lead to a 2014 Nobel Prize in Science for its efficiency and progress and would pave the way for modern automotive and commercial lighting. Before it won the commendation, the Japanese Mazda team would see the new lighting for its automotive capabilities—brighter the xenon HID headlights but far more compact and cooler-operating. It would also allow the MX-5 to have a lower hood line. The problem was that the headlight technology was more expensive than traditional halogen headlights, and to make it standard would add cost. Yet, given the mission of the new MX-5, it was the right thing to do. LED headlights also lent itself to another opportunity: Providing the MX-5 with a “face.” With the small housing, the MX-5’s designers added a pupil to the headlight surrounds, giving the effect of the MX-5 smiling when viewed from some angles. Designers likened this to Buddha’s statue—always staring at onlookers from any angle. With the last major design element of the fourth-generation MX-5 decided, it underwent a few subtle tweaks at the end of 2013 in preparation for production and its world debut.

Cx-5’s interior indulges both heart and soul

What does it mean to craft something, rather than simply assembling it? The difference is attention to detail. When Mazda designed the all-new 2017 CX-5 crossover SUV, the goal was to create a crafted interior with a sharp focus on how the driver and passengers perceive comforts and create a unique connection with the vehicle. To achieve “oneness” between a vehicle and its driver, Mazda engineers were inspired by the Japanese concept of “Jinba Ittai,” or “horse and rider as one.” When a vehicle becomes an extension of the driver, only then is harmony achieved. Providing better control and confidence means every drive is an elevated experience. That’s why every Mazda, from the throttle response and driver-centered cockpits to their agile steering delivers this feeling of Jinba Ittai. more Connecting man to machine is the spirit built into every Mazda. A belief that a car should respect and adapt to its driver’s sensibilities. That’s why every Mazda interior is designed with a driver-centric approach that’s both welcoming and intuitive, with controls and gauges laid out with precision and purpose. And through ceaseless exploration of unconventional ideas, Mazda designers have discovered more ways to make a difference in everyday driving. “We try to reflect the customer’s taste and hone in on what they’re really needing and wanting, and listen to their voice,” said Mazda designer Teresa Spafford. “You have to start with quality materials. From the metal finishes, to the wood trim, to the suede or leather that people touch, it all has to be high quality.” A traditional design approach has been to use metal or wood trimmings, but Mazda likes to defy convention. Mazda designers created a combination finished called “Metal Wood,” which expresses a rich, elegant look with a simpler Japanese design aesthetic. It was no easy task — development took over a year and more than 20 prototypes before “Metal Wood” was perfected. At Mazda, designers and engineers bring this level of meticulous obsession to all their work, relentlessly seeking artistry at every step of the design process. So while refined materials are the foundation of a pleasing interior design, they’re not the final product. The next stage of crafting a sophisticated interior is the aesthetic. “You have to look at the shape that you’re putting that material into,” Spafford explained. “You have to make sure that there’s harmony between the material and the shape. I think what we’ve done as a team is to pull together how our materials harmonize and complement our forms.” The result is an interior that exceeds expectations. “It’s definitely a feeling of getting more than you wanted, so that you really get a feeling for everything as being more refined and a much more sophisticated taste,” she stated. In the fiercely competitive crossover SUV marketplace, it’s common for automakers to cut corners to save money. It’s understandable, but it’s not how Mazda does business. Crafting with a human touch, this physical connection to the product, is critical. Mazda believes this imparts the spirit of each crafstman into every vehicle it makes. You’ll see this expressed in every aspect of Mazda designs. But more importantly, you will feel it.

2017 Mazda CX-9 Earns Strategic Vision’s ‘Total Qualty Impact’ Award

Much like Mazda’s entire lineup, CX-9 continues to garner praise from media and consumers alike. The 2017 Mazda CX-9 three-row crossover SUV further adds to the list of recognitions, earning Strategic Vision’s Total Quality Award as the top midsize crossover SUV in its segment. Mazda’s standout crossover SUV remains the flagship of Mazda’s lineup, positioned to push the brand to new, aspirational heights. Strategic Vision clearly agreed with its Total Quality Impact report, which is a complete, holistic measure of the total quality of vehicle ownership experience, encompassing the positive and negative product experience, including reliability, driving excitement and other aspects of dealership experiences—all energized by the emotional response associated with the experiences. Strategic Vision surveyed customers about even the smallest details, including sound of the engine, quality of the interior seat material and the overall performance. more A major reason Strategic Vision bestowed the CX-9 with its Total Quality Impact Award is because it meets and exceeds owner expectations by providing a premium driving and passenger experience, courtesy of an award-winning, turbocharged SKYACTIV-G 2.5T engine, which delivers excellent performance in everyday driving scenarios, and an interior that is pleasing to the sight and touch with available Nappa leather, real aluminum trim and rosewood supplied by premium Japanese guitar-maker Fujigen. It is with these qualities that Mazda is seeing CX-9 conquest sales from premium and luxury brands. Additionally, complementing what customers see and feel when they drive CX-9 is the peace of mind they get with its safety credentials. The 2017 Mazda CX-9 was recently named as an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick+, the highest designation the nonprofit organization awards. Mazda is the only automaker in North America to have a full line of vehicles rated as Top Safety Pick+ when equipped with available headlights and safety systems. With a starting MSRP of $31,520, Mazda CX-9 provides a remarkable value, from its crafted details to its sleek KODO—Soul of Motion design. MSRP does not include $940 destination charge ($985 in Alaska) or taxes, fees or additional charges.
