From its bold looks to the class-above experience it offers the driver and passengers, Mazda’s CX-9 has earned a reputation for excellence, being named a finalist for both North American Utility Vehicle of the Year and World Car of the Year. Mazda engineers haven’t rested on their laurels, however, adding numerous upgrades to the 2018 CX-9 flagship crossover SUV, further strengthening the “Mazda Premium” indulgences it provides. Among the highlights are more features at every price point such as an improved second row for both greater comfort and easier third-row access and greater sound insulation in what is already one of the quietest vehicles in its class. more All 2018 CX-9 models receive Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) for the first time, a technology that can automatically apply the brakes in emergency situations below 19 mph. CX-9 joins the 2018 Mazda3 compact sedan and 5-door, 2018 CX-3 subcompact crossover SUV and 2017 CX-5 compact crossover SUV in having SCBS as standard. SCBS is a technology that comes as part of Mazda’s i-ACTIVSENSE suite of safety systems. Additionally, Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert are now standard. CX-9 is one of a handful of three-row crossover SUVs to earn a 2017 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety “Top Safety Pick+” recommendation, joining all Mazda models tested to earn the nonprofit’s highest award when equipped with proper headlights and specific technologies. “Mazda CX-9 is designed to provide peace of mind through its i-ACTIVSENSE safety technology suite and its passive features like a strong, lightweight SKYACTIV-BODY. The secondary benefit to its structure is that also helps it deliver uncommonly good, surefooted driving dynamics,” said Tetsu Nakazawa, CX-9 vehicle line manager, Mazda North American Operations (MNAO). “Families trust us to build vehicles that not only surprise and delight with how they drive but also with the engineering excellence that goes into making them, showing that there’s no need to compromise between needs and wants in a seven-passenger people-hauler.” CX-9’s engaging driving dynamics are a further hallmark of the Mazda brand, complemented by its industry-exclusive G-Vectoring Control (GVC), which is new to CX-9 models for 2018. GVC uses the engine in conjunction with steering and throttle inputs to minutely reduce engine torque, putting more weight on the front wheels and making the steering feel more linear and direct. As a result, the driver is able to gain more confidence and control behind the wheel. For 2018, Mazda’s midsize family crossover SUV returns with Sport, Touring, Grand Touring and Signature trim levels, but it includes more equipment at each price point. Besides the newly standard safety technology and refinements, CX-9 Sport features cloth upholstery, standard LED headlights and tail lights, 18-inch alloy wheels, an electronic parking brake, MAZDA CONNECTTM infotainment with a 7-inch screen and Bluetooth audio streaming and phone pairing as standard. In its newly available Sport Package, the standard CX-9 adds auto on/off headlights, High Beam Control, Lane Departure Warning, Lane-Keep Assist, Smart Brake Support, rain-sensing wipers, heated front seats and a power driver’s seat. Additionally, the Sport Package includes full-speed Mazda Radar Cruise Control. The mid-level CX-9 Touring adds leather seating surfaces, an auto-dimming rearview mirror with built-in Homelink garage door opener, power liftgate, Advanced Keyless Entry and an 8-inch MAZDA CONNECTTM screen. New Mazda CX-9 Touring features include the addition of a tilt function on the driver’s seat and power passenger seat with lift and lumbar support. CX-9 Touring’s Premium Package includes LED fog lights, navigation, a lauded BOSE® 12-speaker Premium audio system, SiriusXM satellite radio with a 4-month subscription, rear parking sensors, new front parking sensors, sunroof, retractable sunshades in the second-row doors and a moonroof. The high-trim CX-9 Grand Touring includes 20-inch wheels, Adaptive Front-lighting System, aluminum interior trim, Active Driving Display head-up unit with new Traffic Sign Recognition, roof rails and a memory driver’s seat. CX-9 Grand Touring’s all-new features include heated second-row seats, a heated steering wheel and windshield wiper de-icer. Finally, the top-of-the-line CX-9 Signature adorns the interior with Auburn-colored Nappa leather, rosewood trim supplied by premium Japanese guitar-maker Fujigen and LED signature grille and LED interior lighting. It is with its upmarket KODO design, refinement, driving dynamics and technology that CX-9 has found a home with premium crossover SUV intenders, with more than 55 percent of those purchasing a CX-9 this year opting for a CX-9 Grand Touring or Signature model. Yet, all CX-9s come standard with Mazda’s torque-rich, turbocharged and efficient SKYACTIV-G 2.5T engine, paired to a 6-speed SKYACTIV-DRIVE automatic transmission. Front-wheel is standard for CX-9 Sport, Touring and Grand Touring models. Mazda’s predictive i-ACTIV all-wheel drive is available on all three trim levels and standard for CX-9 Signature. CX-3 Touring also comes with Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Mazda Advanced Keyless Entry, heated front seats and heated side mirrors with integrated turn signals. Newly standard features for CX-3 Touring include auto on/off headlights, rain-sensing windshield wipers and automatic climate control. The Touring Preferred Equipment Package escalates Mazda’s mid-trim model with a BOSE® Premium audio system with seven speakers, power glass moonroof, SiriusXM satellite radio with a 4-month subscription, HD Radio and a cargo cover. Finally, CX-3 Grand Touring builds upon the Preferred Equipment Package and includes Parchment or black leather with red accents and Lux Suede upholstery, adaptive LED headlights, LED fog lights, LED daytime running lights, Mazda Navigation, a full-color Active Driving Display head-up unit and paddle shifters. While many improvements can be seen in the cabin, some of CX-3’s greatest changes can only be felt from behind the wheel such as revised suspension bushings, new front lower control arms, recalibrated dampers and new engine mounts, all designed to benefit CX-3’s already class-leading chassis dynamics. Further, the 2018 CX-3 comes with improved door seals, thicker rear glass and sound suppression mats added underneath the floor and dashboard for a more refined, “Mazda Premium” experience. And, because Mazda’s engineering team doesn’t believe in waiting for major redesigns to implement changes that benefit consumers, throttle and transmission responsiveness have also been improved, complementing Mazda’s “Jinba Ittai”—horse and rider as one—driving philosophy. Part I: Teamwork Makes the Dream Work Commonly, we think the lead singer is the band. He or she is the only reason the band ever became famous—or so we’re led to believe. Remember, though, there’s  the drummer keeping beat, a bassist supporting the timing of the rhythm guitarist and perhaps a few uncredited backup singers making the singer’s voice sound extra powerful. more The same applies when designing a car. While oftentimes one person receives credit as the design chief, it takes a long cast of characters to not only design a car but also drive its inspiration. Take, for example, the fourth-generation MX-5 Miata that went on sale in 2015. Back in 2011, designers from Japan, the U.S. and Europe, led by MX-5 Chief Designer Masashi Nakayama (MX-5 program manager since July 2016) and under the direction of Ikuo Maeda, Mazda’s global head of design, were tasked with redefining Mazda’s legendary roadster. Program Manager Nobuhiro Yamamoto kicked off their efforts by setting targets for what would define the next-generation MX-5—a vehicle whose size and weight they knew would be more comparable to the first-generation’s than any that had come since, with the objective to “innovate in order to preserve.” Their work—and the work of teams from Mazda Corporation in Hiroshima and Tokyo, Japan; Irvine, California-based Mazda Design Americas; and the Frankfurt, German-based Mazda Design Europe shaped Mazda’s smallest but perhaps most vital car. All of the design departments had to work under a very difficult fact: the MX-5 is timeless, somehow being both classic and thoroughly modern at the same time. They had to figure out how to make the car appeal to a new set of buyers without alienating those who made it the best-selling roadster of all time. Upon setting targets, the program team set proportions of the MX-5. Rather than retaining the familiar, somewhat symmetrical shape, with the cabin in the middle of the car, the lines of KODO—Soul of Motion design called for a cab-rearward look, evolving the car’s proportions with some of the same appeal of exotic, European roadsters of yore. Designers and engineers moved the windshield back 70mm from where it had always been. With the MX-5’s “hard points”—where the structural elements of the car like the windshield would be—set, the teams were provided three objectives for Mazda’s next-gen sports car: Beautiful proportions, a roof opens and closes beautifully and details that tickle minds of enthusiasts. The teams had to create a car that complemented the KODO design language but also expanded upon it in a way that was unique to the MX-5. “Our goal was to find a solution to reach that goal. Therefore we defined a task to ourselves, which was to satisfy seemingly conflicting elements of ‘simple and distinct image’ and ‘emotional and expressive image’ at the same time,” said Nakayama. “We made a commitment to never freeze the design until we get there. Upholding this high goal, the journey of developing this car’s design had begun.” In June 2011, all of the studios submitted 1/4-scale clay models showcasing what they felt the next generation MX-5 should look like for evaluation. Each brought unique details that deserved consideration.

Environmental Technology Philosophy In March 2007, Mazda announced the “Sustainable Zoom-Zoom” plan, detailing the company's long-term vision for technology development. This vision commits us to make “cars that always excite, look inviting to drive, are fun to drive, and make you want to drive them again,” and to help achieve “an exciting, sustainable future for cars, people and the Earth”. Nevertheless, it is forecast that internal combustion engines will still account for a high percentage of automobile powertrains even as far ahead as 2020. Anticipated expansion in adoption of environmental technologies (up to 2020) Consequently, Mazda is prioritizing improvements of the base technologies such as improvement in thermal efficiency of an engine and weight reduction for the vehicle body while adopting a Building Block Strategy of gradually introducing electric devices such as brake energy regeneration system, hybrid and other systems. This approach aims to effectively reduce total CO2 emissions with cars that offer a winning combination of driving pleasure and excellent environmental and safety performance to all our customers, without relying heavily on vehicles that are strictly dedicated to meeting environmental needs. Mazda Motor Corporation today announced “Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030,” a new long-term vision for technology development that looks ahead to the year 2030. As part of the new technology to achieve this vision, the company disclosed plans to introduce a next-generation engine called SKYACTIV-X in 2019. SKYACTIV-X NEXT-GENERATION ENGINE Technological innovations • SKYACTIV-X is the world’s first commercial gasoline engine to use compression ignition, in which the fuel-air mixture ignites spontaneously when compressed by the piston • A proprietary combustion method called Spark Controlled Compression Ignition overcomes two issues that had impeded commercialization of compression ignition gasoline engines: maximizing the zone in which compression ignition is possible and achieving a seamless transition between compression ignition and spark ignition. Features • This new proprietary combustion engine combines the advantages of gasoline and diesel engines to achieve outstanding environmental performance, power and acceleration performance. • Compression ignition and a supercharger fitted to improve fuel economy together deliver unprecedented engine response and increase torque 10–30 percent over the current SKYACTIV-G gasoline engine.3 • Compression ignition makes possible a super lean burn4 that improves engine efficiency up to 20–30 percent over the current SKYACTIV-G, and from 35–45 percent over Mazda’s 2008 gasoline engine of the same displacement.
