The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) noted in its most recent Light Duty Fuel Economy Trends report that Mazda Motor Corporation is the most fuel-efficient auto manufacturer in the U.S.  With the highest fleet-wide adjusted fuel economy performance of 29.6 miles per gallon (MPG), Mazda led the chart for model year (MY) 2015.*

For the fourth consecutive year, Mazda has achieved the highest fuel-efficiency of any mainstream automotive manufacturer in the industry, without offering a hybrid or electric vehicle. Mazda’s unique SKYACTIV Technology has made this level of efficiency possible.  SKYACTIV is a suite of component and engineering technologies intended to cut vehicle weight, improve engine efficiency and bolster vehicle dynamics for outstanding environmental and safety performance without sacrificing the brand’s renowned driving pleasure.

Featuring Spark-Controlled Compression Ignition, a never-before-seen combustion method, Mazda’s SKYACTIV-X engine represents the second step in Mazda’s quest to develop a gasoline engine with the ideal internal combustion mechanism.

Developing compression ignition for gasoline engines has long been a goal of engineers. In the SKYACTIV-X, spark plug ignition is used to control compression ignition, resulting in dramatic improvements across a range of important performance indicators.

The Mazda6 midsize sedan returns repackaged for the 2017.5 model year, with the Mazda6 Touring gaining leather seating surfaces, among other trim changes in both entry Mazda6 Sport and mid-trim Mazda6 Touring models, further bolstering Mazda’s award-winning midsize family sedan.

While the second-generation Mazda Familia (also known as the Mazda 1200 and 1300) was a common sight on the roads in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the 1965 Mazda 1000 Coupe, from the first-generation of the Familia series, remains relatively unknown to all but the most devoted of Mazda enthusiasts.

Powered by a newly designed longitudinally mounted overhead camshaft 1,000 cc four-cylinder engine, the compact 1000 Coupe weighed just 1,742 lbs and put out 68 hp at 6,500 rpm and had a top speed of 90 mph.

And the sporting theme didn’t stop there. Available in either Tropical Red or Pyrenean White, this sleek coupe boasted a four-speed gearbox, rear-wheel drive, wishbone ball joint suspension, and front disc brakes. The sporty theme continued with the exterior design—note the chrome trim, the exposed trunk-lid hinges, and the gas cap—and into the cabin, which featured a wood-rimmed three-spoke steering wheel, and beautifully styled instrument binnacle with central tachometer.

One of the world’s rarest Mazdas—just 8,931 were built from 1965 to 1968—it nevertheless paved the way for a series of high-performance models, including the Luce and Luce SS, from 1966 and 1967 respectively, and the era-defining 1967 Cosmo Sport.

Mazda Motor Corporation (Mazda), Denso Corporation (Denso), and Toyota Motor Corporation (Toyota) signed a contract today to jointly develop basic structural technologies for electric vehicles. Furthermore, the three companies have also decided to establish a new company consisting of selected engineers from the three companies to ensure the efficient implementation of the joint technological development projects.

As countries and regions around the world adopt increasingly stringent policies to help reduce greenhouse gases, new regulations that mandate a certain proportion of electric vehicle sales are beginning to emerge. Complying with these environmental regulations, while ensuring the sustainable growth of our companies, requires the development of a wide range of powertrains and technologies. We regard electric vehicles (EVs) as a key technological field in this process alongside fuel cell vehicles.

Every car comes from somewhere. This is the third part of four covering how the design of the fourth-generation Mazda MX-5 Miata came to be.

HEADLIGHTS FRONT AND CENTER
So, the body of the all-new MX-5 had been chosen, but there was still some room to make the front of it stand on its own.

Going back to the earliest MX-5s, designers looked at why there were pop-up headlights: To keep the front end low, which made it look especially sleek in its diminutive stature. After time, as exposed headlights replaced the 1990-1997 pop-up units and evolved to meet safety and lighting legislation around the world, the MX-5’s front end became bulky.

Again, it was time to go back to the beginning.

Of course, pop-up headlights were no longer en vogue, and there was no chance they’d be coming back. But there needed to be some sort of tie to the rest of the Mazda family—simple and clean like the first-gen’s running lamps or almond-shaped like those of the rest of the Mazda family.
